Reimagine Learning for a new way of work in 2050

Most "future-focused" education is still calibrated to about 2030. This is my case for building further out: nine short videos on an education model designed for how work will actually happen by 2050, not how it happened for us.   1. 1An introduction … of sorts …

    Most “future-focused” schooling is still built for around 2030. Build an airport for the traffic you have today and it's obsolete before the tarmac cures; build it for the traffic you'll actually have and it lasts. Education needs the same long lens.

    Twenty years ago, working from a serviced office instead of your own building made you look less credible. Then it didn't. Co-working went the same way: questioned, then normal, then something even government departments do without a second thought. Digital nomadism is the same curve one step further along: no longer a fringe habit of “indie entrepreneurs” but a live option inside large organisations. Richard Branson's own line on it is outcomes over hours, not where you happen to be sitting.

    A child starting school today has around twelve years of it ahead, then a career on top. The workplace waiting for them at the end of that isn't the one we grew up walking into. This is the case for building the school around the workplace that's actually coming, not the one that's already here.

  2. 2What's Really Required?

    Reading, writing, arithmetic. Nobody argues with the three Rs, until you actually sit down and ask what they're for. A calculator does the arithmetic faster than any child, provided someone tells it the right sum in the right order. Spellcheck catches the spelling. Text-to-speech and increasingly natural voice tools are closing in on the reading. The “fundamental” isn't performing the task any more. It's knowing enough to catch the machine when it's wrong.

    Push the question further out and it gets sharper. Some serious forecasters put a technological singularity somewhere around 2050: the exact date is a guess, but the direction isn't. If AI is already good enough to help build better AI, how much of what we insist children master by rote is really still required, and how much is habit?

    Most of what gets taught doesn't survive contact with real life anyway: ask anyone how much of their trigonometry is still in their head. The honest way to build a curriculum isn't to start from what's always been taught. It's to start from 2050, work out what a person genuinely needs to participate in it, then build backward from there.

  3. 3Fish climbing trees

    Picture a fish climbing a tree. If you actually saw it happen, you'd be stunned, genuinely impressed, filming it for your friends. You would not, for one second, think “well, that's just a mediocre climber.” You'd recognise instantly that climbing was never the point.

    That's most school assessment, applied to most children. Line every kid up against the same yardstick and you'll reward the rare ones who happen to fit it, and quietly write off everyone else as falling short. What actually happened is you asked a fish to climb a tree and marked it down for being wet.

    Interest does the heavy lifting that forced structure can't. Most of us sat through a history class on Operation Barbarossa and forgot it by lunch; some of us only really learned it years later, because a place name suddenly meant something personal and sent us looking it up on our own. That's not a coincidence: it's how retention actually works.

    So the model: a small core of real fundamentals, then build the rest around what a child is genuinely interested in, what they're already good at, and the areas just outside that where they can be gently stretched, at whatever pace and level they're actually ready for, not the one their birth year assigns them. Expose, don't indoctrinate. If the interest catches, the learning takes care of itself. If it doesn't, forcing it was never going to work anyway.

  4. 4We learn what interests us

    Ask any parent and they'll tell you their kid has a spark somewhere: a thing they light up for. Most schools aren't built to notice it, and most parents, if they're honest, aren't much better at it either; a child's real strength usually only gets seen once they've pushed hard enough against the system to make it visible. Which means for every one who gets noticed, plenty more don't.

    That doesn't have to wait for adulthood. The systems getting this right (Montessori's been doing it for the better part of a century, Finland and Germany run versions of it now) don't wait for a child to fight their way to being seen. They go looking.

    Australia's own education departments are starting to shift this way too, which says the idea isn't fringe any more, just slow. The layer this initiative adds on top is mobility: build the same interest-led approach into a schooling model that travels with a family, wherever the work takes them, without losing the thread on what the child actually cares about.

  5. 5Who Is This For?

    Start with the people already living this problem, not hypothetically.

    A family in Australia, here on a work visa tied to a project. The project slips. Nobody can say when (or if) it picks back up. So they do what you do: give up the lease, ship the furniture, pull their child out of school mid-year, and fly back to India not knowing whether it's six weeks or six months before they're needed again. Somewhere in the middle of all that, a kid's education just stops.

    That's not a rare story. Dutch and German families on shorter-term visas hit versions of it constantly. It happened to me: schooling split across New Zealand from about two and a half to seven, then Sydney, then more moves after that, and I got off lightly compared to what some kids go through now.

    This is built for that family: digitally nomadic parents whose work already goes anywhere; families who treat travel as part of a child's education rather than an interruption to it; anyone whose visa has an expiry date attached to their kid's school enrolment. One system that holds its shape whether a child is learning in Sydney or Delhi, so a lost job or a stalled project costs a family their housing, not their kid's education.

  6. 6What about social interaction?

    This is the first thing everyone says. “But what about socialisation?” Fair question, and it deserves a real answer rather than a dismissal.

    Some of it happens in person, the old-fashioned way, through physical hubs where kids travelling with the programme actually meet face to face. Some of it happens through travel itself, which throws a child into contact with people, languages and ways of living that a classroom simply can't replicate. And a lot of it happens online, which sounds thin until you remember that an entire generation grew up treating the internet as the default place relationships form, not a poor substitute for it.

    It's mostly the adults who struggle with that part, not the kids. We had pen pals: letters, sometimes a cassette tape in the post, weeks between replies, and nobody questioned whether those were real friendships. Today's version is faster, richer and constant. If a slow, delayed, text-only relationship counted as genuine then, an instant, video-capable one now doesn't need defending. In person, in hubs, and online. Together is the model.

  7. 7What about sports?

    Coming from Australia, this is the question I get more than any other. Sport here is close to religion (probably the way cricket is in India), so “what happens to sport” is never a small objection.

    Solo sport barely blinks: tennis, squash, running, rowing, all of it travels as well as the child does, geography allowing (you're not exactly snowboarding in the middle of a city with no mountains nearby). Team sport is the harder problem, and the answer is borrowed from rugby. The Barbarians are an invitational side with no fixed home ground: pull together whoever's available, put them up against a local club, play. It's a genuine, decades-old tradition across the rugby world (the UK, South Africa, France, Australia, New Zealand) and there's no reason it stays a rugby-only idea. Soccer, hockey, baseball, team tennis, all of it works the same way.

    It needs a critical mass in each city students actually cluster in (twenty in New York, twenty in Amsterdam, thirty in London, twenty in Sydney, numbers like that), enough to field a side and find a fixture. What it isn't optimised for is a permanent roster chasing a season-long championship. What it protects is the part that actually matters to a kid: belonging to a team, showing up, playing the game.

  8. 8First steps to digital nomad schools

    Being digitally nomadic isn't the finished product here. It's the first move.

    Underneath the mobility sits everything already proven to work in future-focused learning: interest-led teaching, team-teaching, building around a child's strengths rather than a fixed syllabus. Digital nomadism is what makes that portable. What comes after it isn't decided yet, and I'd be lying if I told you it was, because the workforce it's aiming at hasn't finished arriving either.

    Thirty-odd years ago, almost nobody seriously planned for businesses running with no office at all. The internet existed earlier than most people think, but the version that quietly rewired how we work didn't really land until the early nineties, and even then, barely anyone called it. Betting on where 2050 lands takes more than one person's hunch. It takes a genuine inner circle: futurists, visionaries, people willing to think seriously about where work is actually going, building the on-ramp for the generation who'll have to walk it.

  9. 9What is a digital nomad school?

    Start with what “digitally nomadic” already means for work: the ability to run a business from a plane, a train, a co-working space or a serviced office, with no fixed address required. The school version does the same thing for a child's education: a network of physical hubs, anywhere in the world a family happens to be.

    The whole model rests on one distinction: information is just reference material sitting there until somebody uses it; knowledge is what happens once it's actually put into action. Passive consumption (books, screens, a teacher talking at the front of a room) produces information. It doesn't produce much knowledge on its own.

    None of the pieces here are exotic. Khan Academy already runs a full curriculum from kindergarten through university-level content, built by Sal Khan. Western Sydney University now has more students online than on campus. Remote learning isn't new either; it goes back to radio-based schooling, decades before any of this technology existed. What's new is stitching it together properly: online content for consistency wherever a family lands, physical hubs for the in-person part, and facilitators on the ground whose job is to follow a child's actual interest rather than deliver a fixed lecture.

    Those hubs don't need to be built from nothing. Corporate offices, banks, hotels, conference centres, sporting clubs, co-working spaces, universities. Most cities already have space that could host one, provided it's genuinely safe and away from anything built around an adult crowd.

    And travel isn't a distraction from the learning, it's a multiplier on it. Geography, culture, language, politics, religion. All of it lands differently when it's lived rather than read about, and a language sinks in a lot faster surrounded by people who actually speak it. Build all of that around where work is heading over the next thirty years, not just where it already is, and you've got the shape of the thing.
